Magnolia Electric Co. is Jason Molina's band of musicians that was formed around 2003. Molina is originally from Ohio in the United States. Before forming Magnolia Electric Co. he recorded under the name Songs:Ohio and he also records under his own name. In fact the history of the band is intrinsically linked to Molina's earlier Songs:Ohio moniker: the Magnolia Electric Co. live album 'Fading Trails' was recorded at a time when the band was still touring under their former name.
The genre of music that Magnolia's album releases have contained varies from straight out alternative indie-rock to moody blues. 'What comes after the Blues' which was released in 2005 contains some of the best blues music produced by a rock band in recent years. Molina's moody melancholic voice sets the tone perfectly. They have an interesting sound that reminds you of good old fashioned songwriting and blues singing. There is a definite country-inspired rock sound contained within their albums. They also include some keyboard type sounds and brass overtones.
