Funk & Soul
Funk music has its roots in African-American culture of the 1960s. At that time there was a real blending of rhythm and blues, jazz and soul into a type of music that emphasized the bass and rhythms of music above melodies. James Brown is of course widely known as the godfather of funk music. Soul on the other hand is funk's melodic sibling, with its emphasis on vocal harmonies and gospel.
