The Boards of Canada are Michael Sandison & Marcus Eoin from Edinburgh, Scotland. The name of their electronica double act comes from the National Film Boards of Canada, whose music on many Canadian documentaries inspired the group. Their music is in many places eerie and nostalgic. It seems to remind you of something innate inside of you; kind of like the soundtrack to a distant memory. Some of their work could be seen as being too bland and too electronic for some listeners but overall their sound is very unique. They are famous for using weird samples of children or strange people talking and using hip hop beats over basic but intrinsic synth patterns and riffs. They are in a way every scientists’ favourite electronica act. Particular favourites include ‘An Eagle in Your Mind’, ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Turquoise Hexagon Sun’ from the wonderful ‘Music has the Right to Children’ album and ‘1969’ from ‘Geogaddi’. Their latest album ‘The Campfire Headphase’ sees a welcome slight change of direction with some earthier, organic, folky, guitar elements being used with their trademark warped electronica.
