4 Hero are Mark Clair & Dennis McFarlane from London. They formed in the late 1980s and began to have a huge impact on the rave scene of the time. In that era they created a very dark and atmospheric drum and bass sound which included releases such as 'Mr Kirk's nightmare'. Since then they have moved more and more into soulful directions. They virtually created the 'broken beat' sound with quality remixes of tracks such as 'Shade Of Soul - Give In To Me' and 'Focus - Having Your Fun '. Some of their albums have been a little dissapointing in terms of longevity and variation of musical styles but as prolific producers of fine EPs they deserve high praise. They have also managed to create such a unique sound of soulful guest vocalists combined with rugged breaks and beats topped off by some fantastic synth riffs and melodies. They also often use a string orchestral sound over the top of their funky rhythms to enhance the melodical feel of tracks. Even their closest broken beat rivals such as Bugz in the Attic have not got anywhere near 4 Hero in terms of the quality and quantity of their tracks. Let's hope they are able to keep freshening up their sound and continue producing great tracks for at least another decade or so.
